Yeah, it’s time for a new This vs That for the second time this week. And today you’ll meet Jason and Simone from JS Living the Dream.

JS Living The Dream

First… tell us a bit about you:

We are Jason and Simone from JS Living the Dream.  We left our home in Napa, California in July 2013 and started our journey around the world.  So far we have visited 12 countries and have done so by train, plane, boat, car and more!  We are truly living the dream.

What do you prefer?

Mountain vs Coast
A hard one!  Depends on where we are I suppose.  Both have such beauty and our favorite country so far, New Zealand had the best of both!

Charter vs Self organized
Self Organized all the way.  We prefer to research a place and do it on our own rather that hiring someone.  We find it to be much cheaper piecing it all together on your own.

Summer vs Winter
Simone would say summer and Jason would say winter.  However after chasing summer for the last year we are both ready to experience Fall and Winter again!

London vs Paris
We actually haven’t been to either yet and aren’t really big city people.  Although I think we would like both of these iconic cities.

Beach vs City
We would take the beach over a big city any day, but what we really love is the small towns in the countryside.

Hostel vs Hotel
Hotel!  We tried a couple hostels along the way and they just aren’t our thing.  We like to splurge on a nice hotel once and a while, but mostly try to find homestays, apartments and B&B’s.

Explore on your own vs Guided tour
We prefer to explore on our own.  But we did just do a guided tour in Rome that was awesome.  We were able to learn so much history and enjoyed it much more than had we just wandered.  Typically we do some research, ask locals and then go from there.

Beach vs Pool
Jason’s a SCUBA diver so he loves the beach!

Asia vs Europe
Too soon to tell!  We just arrived in Europe after 4 months in Asia so we will have to wait and see.  So far we are loving Italy and although we had our ups and downs in Asia we absolutely fell in love with Cambodia and Bali, Indonesia.

Taxi vs Public transport
We try to avoid taxis and have found public transportation to be much easier.  We found the buses and subways in Asia to be very good.  In Australia and New Zealand we had a vehicle.

Backpack vs Suitcase
Backpack!  Sometimes in the heat of the day after walking a long way we think how nice it would be to have a bag on wheels, but we are thankful we chose a backpack.  We both have 40L packs and then small daypacks.  We are able to keep our hands free, force a space bubble (very helpful in China) and quickly maneuver over sand, cobblestones and more.

Planning vs Spontaneity
This has been an area of growth for Simone.  After a few months on the road, the need to plan slowly went away.  We still plan, but typically a few days before we head to a new spot rather than weeks or months in advance!

Australia vs USA
The USA is our home, so of course we have to say the US!  It is so diverse and there is so much to experience.  We don’t have Kolas and Kangaroos but we have some pretty amazing landscapes full of majestic animals.

RV vs Tent
We love to camp so either would be fine, but we prefer a tent.

Cruise vs Road trip
Both!  We love a good road trip and have been on lots, but we also love cruises and head to Norway at the end of June on a 20 night cruise…kind of a vacation from our travels.

Snorkeling vs Scuba
Jason’s a certified diver, so he prefers Scuba.  Simone’s not a huge fan of the ocean, but on this trip has tried snorkeling a couple times and actually likes it.

And at last, what is your favorite (travel) quote?

“The most dangerous risk of all is the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.”
