The time flies by and I remember it like it was yesterday… 4th of July 2011 was the day we met for the very first time after chatting online for hours and hours for three days in a row, after we got in touch at a dating site. We clicked immediately, it was (cliché, I know) love at first sight and it didn’t take too long before Jon asked if we could go on a weekend trip together. Everything felt so perfect so I didn’t hesitate and a month later we did go on our first trip, to Tallinn. Who knew this was the first out of many, our first country out of 36 in 5 years…
So, what have we been doing for the last 5 years? Where have we been? What’s our favorite place (or places)? Have we had any bad travel experiences?
Lets take some time for a «short» summary of our travels together!
2011: The first out of many…
The year we met and the year we took our first trip together. We had a great weekend in Tallinn exploring the city and getting some SPA treatments. There were so much going on in 2011, so we didn’t travel more that year.
2012: Bitten by the travel bug….
We started off with a 2-days cruise to Copenhagen a weekend in January, then we drove back to Denmark during Easter holidays to see more of this country not too far away from home. In July we decided on another weekend getaway, this time to Italy and Rome.
3 months later we went on our first “long” trip; two weeks in Mexico at a 5-star all-inclusive hotel; soaked up in luxury, adventure and romance, and we had shitloads of fun!
2013: The year of road trips…
We found a reasonable trip to Tenerife a week in February, explored this island in a rental car and took a day trip to La Gomera.
In the end of March it was time for this year’s Easter holiday and we flew down to Vienna in Austria to pick up our rental car, we then drove to Krakow (via Brno in Czech Republic) where we had our first (and last motel experience), then through Slovakia (without any help from the GPS as it didn’t have any maps over this country) to Budapest and Bratislava before returning to Vienna.
A few weeks later we went on a spontaneous weekend to Athens, and the following week we travelled to Iceland to drive all around the island for 5 days in a rental car. We had a weekend in Paris that summer (somehow we manage to book the exact same weekend as the last stage of Tour de France so we had some challenges (we had to take the metro to get on the other side of the road, haha).
As the year before we ended our traveling year with a bigger trip: three weeks in Australia; a road trip along the East coast, from Sydney to Cairns.
2014: Lets take a weekend trip… or 6!
In January we got travel fever and went to London for a weekend visiting all kinds of markets, the following month we travelled on a weekend trip to Berlin where we ended up at an anti-Valentine’s Day party.
For Easter that year we took some extra days off to explore and experience The Middle East, and we flew to Aqaba in Jordan, visited the desert of Wadi Rum, saw the ancient city of Petra and the roman city of Jerash, float around in the Dead Sea before crossing the border into Palestine and then Israel. After a few days in Israel and the Palestinian Territory we flew to Istanbul for two nights. We did end up with a bonus night, but more of that later…
In May and June we had 3 (long) weekend trips: New York, Rome (including the Vatican City) and Malta. The month after we went a castle-to-castle trip in Sweden! In October we decided to travel back to Mexico, this time for three weeks, same place, same hotel…
2015: Lets tick of a big bucket list item!
My big dream, at the top of my bucket list, the highlight of my life: we went to Africa; we went on SAFARI! Jon went on a similar overland trip before we met, but this time we were about to experience it all together. We had a couple of days in Cape Town on our own before joining an overland tour in southern Africa; from South Africa, to Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and we threw on a bonus-country: Zambia, our country number 30! It was an adrenaline filled trip and we have so many great memories from that trip. Just imagine you standing there in front of two wild elephants, 50m away from you… Or to stand there eye to eye with an old lonely Buffalo (also called the black death) just waiting and hoping he would pass. On the very same trip we swam in crocodile and hippo-infested water.
We then went to Lisbon for a weekend, and later to Burgas to get some sun in May.
On the 25th of December we boarded the flight and went all the way to Bali for Christmas and New Year. We stayed in a private villa, had a great driver for a couple of days and just relaxed and enjoyed each others company. The New Year’s Eve was spent on the beach with a romantic dinner during sunset, and drinks and a great view of the fireworks at midnight.
2016: The year of great deals…
We started the year in Bali, obviously, and on our way home we had a 9hour long stopover in Singapore where we tried to make the best out of the time we had. We also got to see the best side of the humankind when trying to get to the city from the airport…
In February we got an opening and we had the opportunity to go away for a whole month, and after finding some cheap flight tickets we decided to take that month exploring more of Australia in a campervan. It was a crazy month (in a good way) with over 12.000 km on the road, visiting 5 states.
That wasn’t the only great deal we got this year! SAS had a big sale and we got a pretty good deal on flights to Beijing where we went for a week in May, and we got to tick of another bucket list item that we didn’t think we would do in a long time (but we did!): to visit the Great Wall of China.
And now we’re currently in Dublin, our 36th country, celebrating our five years together…
Stay tuned for our next post about our 5 years of traveling, we’ll share about our ups and downs and our favorite places. Don’t miss it!
