The year of 2016 started with a bang as we spent New Year’s Eve in Indonesia, on Bali; ‘the island of a thousand temples’. We had a few days on the island before and after the New Year began, and then we had a 9hour stopover in Singapore on our way home, and we had to exploit that time and explore as much as we could in that time. At this short stop in a new country we saw a glimpse of the kindness in people as a nice lady paid for our bus ticket. What a nice thing to do!
It hasn’t been too many trips in 2016, but it has been a few bigger trips and that’s different from previous years. In February we got an opening and a big opportunity to take a month off, and in quite a short time we had to decide on where to go and what to do. We were longing back to Australia, we were ready to hit the road and go on another epic road trip, but this time longer… So much longer! We found a great deal on airfares (love sales!), booked a small campervan from Britz Campervans and hit the road. We drove no less than 12.000km, we visited 5 states and we had an amazing time!
In May, with some holidays coming up, we took a week off to visit Beijing. We had a guide for three days to see the main attractions, and of course the opportunity to visit one of the new seven wonders of the world: The Great Wall Of China. And did you know you actually can take a slide back down from it? Awesome!
On the 4th of July we had our 5 years anniversary as a couple, and we couldn’t just sit at home on a special day as that, could we? So we flew to Dublin in Ireland for the weekend and the following days, and on the special day we went out to see a show with dinner included.
We spent the time exploring the city, but we also took a day trip to see more of Ireland.
After a trip to Dublin there were some long months without traveling, but in November I could finally fulfil my dream of visiting Costa Rica. It was about time, as it had become almost an obsession. I was so in love with a country I never had been to. And for good reasons! We both loved it so much despite that we were so unlucky with the weather. There were so many tropical storms in the area messing up the weather, and Costa Rica hasn’t been hit by a hurricane for over 180 years, and guess what! It hit! It was on one of our last days and we had luckily arrived San Jose and delivered our rental car. We drove from the east coast early on the day it was expected to hit, fortunately we were not affected by the storm. Unfortunately areas in the northern part of Costa Rica did, and there were some severe damages.
We had so much fun in Costa Rica; visiting Arenal Volcano, seeing breathtaking waterfalls, being surrounded by gorgeous nature, getting lost on the road, horseback riding in the jungle, trying surfing for the very first time (no surf lessons, so it was an interesting experience, haha), spotting wildlife, being stuck peninsula during a massive rainstorm (so bad the power went out and was gone for days) and so much more. We also took a daytrip to Nicaragua, and headed to Bocas del Toro in Panama for a couple of days.
On our way home the flight was delayed with 7-8 hours and because of that we didn’t reach our connecting flight. We did on the other hand get a bonus country and time to explore Toronto in Canada for a few hours after spending the night at Radisson Suite Hotel (provided by Air Canada) before we had to fly home.
We have itchy feet, and are constantly talking about travel; where to go, when we can travel… So we have of course booked our first trip for 2017!
In 2016 we have:
- In total we have taken 21 flights; 2 domestic and 19 international
- We have spent over 120 hours on a plane – that’s 5 days!
- We visited 9 countries, and have in total visited 40 countries together (in a bit over 5 years).
- The longest non-stop flight we took was 15h; from Sydney to Doha
- Ticked of another bucket list item: To see an active volcano (we did actually see flowing lava in a volcano crater in Nicaragua)
- ‘We Travel Together’ has been listed #11 in the Top Part-Time Travel Blogs of 2016 by HelloTravel
